WWE had been the unchallenged leader of pro wrestling ever since WCW went out of business in the early 2000s. That is, until All Elite Wrestling (AEW) owned by Tony Khan arrived on the scene in 2019. It not only gave the fans a newer option but entered into a direct contest with the Stamford-based promotion. However, WWE seems to be winning this battle at the moment if one considers one important parameter.
The Sami Zayn and The Bloodline saga has been one of the most engrossing storylines recently. The viewership numbers for WWE programming have improved due to this epic angle. AEW, on the other hand, has failed to make ground after an impressive start. The latest edition of Dynamite, which aired on 15 February, saw the lowest viewership since November 2022.

In stark contrast to AEW’s recent struggles, WWE has racked up quite impressive figures, particularly after the end of January. The success has been not only on the traditional TV front, but the promotion has also amassed record numbers in other areas. The Royal Rumble 2023 has been the most grossing and viewed iteration of the yearly event. The event saw the triumphant return of second-generation superstar Cody Rhodes in the men’s Royal Rumble match, which he went on to win.
On top of that, a video featuring bitter rivals Zayn and Roman Reigns has become the most-watched WWE clip of 2023 on the web. The clip has been seen viewed around 20 million times according to wwe.com.
This is bound to raise the tension amongst the higher-ups at AEW. Especially after the recent dismal viewership records. The numbers are the lowest in a long time and a cause for concern for the promotion. Amidst all this, a streaming deal to air their content in a major market will appear as a ray of hope. The Tony Khan-led promotion is currently building up to the AEW Revolution pay-per-view, scheduled in the first week of March.
Is the new regime making the desired impact?
The new regime under Triple H for WWE can also be considered as a key factor in its improved ratings. His vision has seen the returns of plenty of released superstars and more streamlined storytelling. There has been a renewed interest in the product with the engrossing Bloodline saga a shining example.

It seems competition from AEW has forced WWE to yet again up its game and they have delivered big time. But the Stanford-based promotion has been in the business long enough to know the tables can turn at any moment. Fans would be keeping an eye on this engaging tussle between the two wrestling companies.
