All In London served unexpected appearances to the wrestling fans watching the show and Sting‘s return was also on the menu. There was nothing slated or rumored about his appearance at Wembley Stadium until the lights went off and he was spotted walking down the ramp. After all, why would he appear after his storied retirement earlier this year? Nevertheless, the wrestling legend was there to help out his former tag team partner.

This happened right after the fierce and scary match that Darby Allin had against Jack Perry. The former was in grave danger. If it weren’t for Sting, he wouldn’t have gotten out of that coffin breathing fine. But what is he even doing back in AEW months after his retirement match?

What does Sting’s unexpected return tell us?

Darby Allin and Jack Perry had a coffin match on the card for the PPV. Sting’s former teammate is usually considered a fearsome opponent in such settings, but Jungle Boy didn’t hesitate in making quick work of him by the end. After winning, he tried setting him on fire by pouring gas onto his body bag and coffin, a throwback to their Blood & Guts match some weeks ago. This is when Sting walked in on the scene and dished out some violence against Perry and his mates. It still seems unlikely that Sting has walked out of his retirement at this age, especially after having an official retirement match. Excalibur, who was also on the announcement table for the night, claimed that “Sting may be retired,” but he has not forgotten about his past feuds.

So, he may still be retired but will probably stick around for this storyline and a few more appearances as a supporting mentor for Allin. This seems like an acceptable path for Sting, especially after how Allin helped him through his swansong.

Sting wouldn’t have survived for long enough without his partner

Sting was 64 at the time of his retirement match in AEW. Before joining the roster filled with young talents, the wrestler had considered himself retired. Partly because of his age and partly because of the injury that he had sustained back then. When the wrestling veteran came back to the squared circle, one question loomed over everybody’s head: How will he compete with the rest? If Sting had been pitched against young talents, he would have surely shown his true colors, but not without exposing the weaknesses that he must have developed growing older.

Hence, it was important for the legend to be paired up with another young star. Tony Khan found Darby Allin to check all the boxes. As parts of the same storyline, Sting and Allin both helped each other along the way. A WWE legend even appreciated this booking by Tony Khan. According to him, the head honcho of AEW used ‘The Icon’ in a judicious manner, the only way that he could have maintained his fame in the wrestling business. And now that he is back, we might see him use a similar pattern with him except that he wouldn’t be fighting others off for most of the time.

What are your thoughts on Sting’s return? Would you like to see him wrestle another match?
