Shane McMahon in AEW—Is this the game-changer Tony Khan needs to crush WWE?

A few weeks ago, a rumor began to spread that Tony Khan and Shane McMahon had a conversation about working together in the future. It seems that the meeting did not take place then but it has finally happened. WrestleTalk and Fightful have confirmed that Tony Khan and Shane McMahon met earlier this week at a private airport in Arlington.

There it appears that the idea of Shane being able to appear on All Elite Wrestling was discussed. Reports suggested that the meeting took place in an office at a private Arlington airport on Monday, July 29, 2024, in the afternoon. They further revealed that the meeting took place, with Khan and McMahon discussing ‘possibilities of moving forward.’

It was further added that Khan had been open to talking to McMahon for a while. But it is believed that they had never met or even spoken before. Rumors about the possibility of McMahon joining AEW surfaced only recently. Adding further fuel to the fire, a picture of the meetup was leaked online by WrestleTalk. This only led credence to the possibility of Vince McMahon’s son working for WWE’s biggest rival.

Publicly, Tony Khan commented in a recent interview on the Maggie & Perloff show that McMahon was “welcome to stop by at any time” and that he “seems like a very nice guy.” So far, all things point to McMahon double-crossing his own family-run promotion to join Tony Khan’s All Elite Wrestling. But would he be working as an active wrestler?

What would be Shane McMahon’s role in All Elite Wrestling?

Well, according to the guys at the Busted Open Podcast, Shane McMahon can play a major role in helping All Elite Wrestling get further success in the pro wrestling sphere. In one of the latest editions of the show, Dave LaGreca, Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer discussed the latest AEW meetup.

Have an interesting take?

According to them, it is less about McMahon being an in-ring competitor and more about using his business acumen to aid Tony Khan. Bully Ray said, “I’m not saying that this conversation about the wrestling business has to do with Shane being brought in as a talent to AEW, Shane buying into AEW. Shane, I forget exactly what Shane does for a living. But it’s very, very detached from pro wrestling. And it’s in, I believe he does a lot of his business overseas. Maybe the business meeting is about how Shane’s company can help AEW overseas and break into a different market.”

Ray continued, “Because I believe Shane was working on a big deal with China for the WWE or bringing the WWE with into pay-per-view in China back in the day. So I’m not insinuating that this is about Shane making his debut in AEW, Shane buying AEW, but I’m sure it was some type of business meeting that had to do with the professional wrestling industry.”

An appearance by Shane McMahon in AEW would break the traditional barriers between AEW and WWE. Historically, the McMahon family has been intrinsically tied to WWE, and an appearance by Shane in AEW would symbolize a significant break in this relationship. It would be an unprecedented event that would have huge ramifications in professional wrestling. Nothing is off-limits in pro wrestling as history loves to remind us. What do you think? What role could McMahon play in AEW? Let us know in the comments.
