Tony Khan’s poor booking choices emerged once again with MJF and RUSH heading to their grudge single match on next week’s AEW Dynamite. The fact that the highly hyped-up showdown airs in a non-commercial setup ahead of a big PLE doesn’t really sit well with a chunk of wrestling veterans.
The long-brewed animosity between the two top acts was expected to take a final shape around the Forbidden Door, in 2024. Khan chose to pull out his trump card earlier than anticipated. However, Bully Ray deems it a blunder similar to the infamous Hulk Hogan-Bill Goldberg WCW booking.
Bully Ray questions Tony Khan as to why MJF-RUSH is airing on “free TV”?

Hulk Hogan and Bill Goldberg in WCW carry a lot of sentiments, as well as a deep dose of reality check. When the duo clashed in a historic main event back in 1998, fans had their hearts in their mouth as if they were experiencing something larger than life.
While Eric Bischoff didn’t disappoint them with his idea, the notion of putting the match on free TV proved to be short-sighted. That decision arguably marked the very start of the promotion’s inevitable decay.
Recollecting that memory, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray noted, ‘‘Do you have a theory on this? Do you have a theory as to why we’re getting Max and RUSH next week? Lord knows I want to see more of it, but do I want to see more of it on free TV? If you watch the WCW documentary, a lot of people scratch their heads about why Eric gave away Goldberg and Hogan on free TV. I’m not comparing Rush and MJF to Goldberg and Hogan by no stretch. I’m comparing the why free TV.”
While we don’t know whether the decision to book MJF vs RUSH in a commercial-free opening match on the June 19th episode of AEW Dynamite will land AEW in a similar tragedy to that of the WCW in the 90s, Khan has full faith in The Devil.

Khan believes MJF is an ALL Elite lifer
AEW has come a long way from its inception five years back, but some loopholes keep on flaring up. Despite taking on board a host of top-notch talents, the company has failed to gain traction regarding viewership. But Khan doesn’t let that setback lower his spirit at all. Along with that line, he recently dropped a massive status update on none other than the AEW’s poster boy, Maxwell Friedman Jacob.
MJF recently returned to the ring on the Double or Nothing PLE in May and signed a big-money contract, rubbishing the rampant rumors of a WWE switch. While TV Insider asked Khan how he felt about MJF’s return and his current contract status, he was in total awe. The AEW head honcho made it clear that MJF will be ALL Elite for the long haul, perhaps for eternity.
