Mercedes Mone‘s arrival at AEW has changed the company’s landscape in the women’s division. It seems like she is enjoying her time in the Jacksonville-based promotion. On the contrary, she has been outspoken about her struggles in WWE. The then Sasha Banks left WWE in May 2022, along with Naomi.
Her departure was reportedly attributed to creative frustrations and concerns about her position within the women’s division. Mone recently claimed that WWE placed restrictions on her filming ‘The Mandalorian’ and claimed that it was like pulling her teeth. Mone later confirmed that she also has creative control in AEW.
Eric Bischoff, one of the most influential and controversial figures in wrestling history, shared his thoughts on the current situation of Mercedes Mone. The pro wrestling veteran said she shouldn’t have been given creative control. It is somewhat of a known fact by now that the CEO Mone cannot deliver promos. She just isn’t good on the mic, especially when compared to her amazing in-ring work. However, it seems like Mone thinks she isn’t bad at delivering promos, so she keeps using her creative control to be on the mic.

Something that, according to Bischoff, is hurting the Tony Khan-led promotion. AEW should’ve been as strict as the WWE, which tried to keep Banks as far away from the mic as possible. On his 83 Weeks podcast, he said, “But WWE knew how to use, utilize Sasha Banks’ strengths. But more importantly, WWE understood her limitations and produced her around her limitations. What does Tony Khan do? He gives her the ball. He gives her creative control. For some reason, Mercedes Mone, previously Sasha Banks, feels like she’s a great promo. One of the reasons I never heard her do promos in WWE is WWE knew better. She cannot carry a promo. She should never be allowed to open her mouth. Every time she opens her mouth, her stock goes down.”

He further added, “And the fact that Tony gave creative control to someone who has never demonstrated the ability to be good at creative, because he certainly didn’t have creative control at WWE, to spend $5 million a year plus on a talent and give that talent creative control. And then once you do realize that she’s going to drive her own character and, by the way, your company into the ditch and not do anything about it, that’s interesting.” Well, it seems like AEW has to re-negotiate the creative control clause with Mone again. However, there are also some reports that claim that the CEO might be not be telling the truth about having the power to control her narrative.

A few weeks ago, Mercedes Mone commented during an interview that Tony Khan had given her some creative power. Although this would not be surprising, given that several AEW wrestlers have such power, the veracity of this claim has now been questioned. During a Q&A session, Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp was asked about Mercedes Mone’s comments. Sean Ross questioned the integrity of these comments, suggesting that they could be part of his character rather than being a reality.
He said, “I would be shocked if that was true. She does a lot of her interviews in character.” It is plausible that Mercedes Mone has some creative influence or Tony Khan’s confidence to make decisions within AEW. However, it is important to remember that the final word on creative decisions will continue to fall on Tony Khan. What do you think? Should Mone have creative control? Let us know in the comments.
