Should Tony Khan clean house to secure AEW's new WBD deal?

Tony Khan is moving towards a big deal with WBD. A few weeks ago, fans were worried that AEW might be shifted to a new home for its television shows because of the previous contract coming to an end. However, reports suggest that Khan has been offered a new contract under WBD, allowing him to keep his show under the same network. Despite the deal, the President of the wrestling promotion has been unable to shake off the criticism he endures regularly. Eric Bischoff, one of his online nemesis, recently advised him to make some layoffs in the company.

AEW has a big roster, including the wrestlers who don’t make it to the screen for several weeks. This has led to Eric Bischoff criticizing how Tony Khan should either start using them or lay off the talents that he doesn’t use to prevent additional expenditure. Speaking on the ’83 Weeks’ podcast, Bischoff said, “Re-evaluate the talent roster. Get rid of the people that there’s just no reason to have around. Thin out the herd because the roster is too big.

The WCW legend also pointed out, “He’s creating zero f**king revenue with it other than his television licensing fee. And what are they averaging? 120, 125,000 on pay-per-view.” At last, the host highlighted, “Then I would focus on creative.” He added to the last point, saying, “It’s laughable what little progress they’ve made in five or six years with the hundreds of millions of dollars that Tony Khan has invested so far. I would really focus on storytelling.”

Bischoff pointed out how Tony Khan needs to fire the talent he is not using, bring up his game in terms of viewership, and also focus on the creative part of the company because he doesn’t find it any special.

While the rest of the things may not be being worked on, reports reveal that multiple layoffs in AEW might be on the way.

Will Tony Khan fire multiple employees soon?

Reports from Fightful recently claimed that WWE has released Bobby Lashley. However, this is not where they will stop, as per WrestlePurists. Later on, the same reporter from the source also claimed that more moves are to be made from both WWE and AEW in terms of talent firing. So, wrestling fans should brace for impact as a list may be coming through in the next few days, deciding which talent Tony Khan is keeping and which ones he will release.

Have an interesting take?

Although we don’t know about it as of now, one of the names that we should look out for is perhaps Ricky Starks. The reason is simple; the Jacksonville-based promotion hasn’t used him in so many months that fans have called out Tony Khan and suggested that it would be better for him to be WWE-bound instead.

That won’t happen unless he is released from AEW first. So, if the reports are correct and the management goes through with the decision, Starks may be released considering how he is not being used in any of the AEW shows, instead he has to wrestle in independent shows to stay active in the wrestling community.
