For most of 2023, the WWE has been at war with AEW over viewership. But the WWE did not start this; Tony Khan of AEW started it. While the WWE did win one battle for views back against WCW, it looks like they could also secure the bag in the form of another win. Despite Khan’s best efforts, the viewership of AEW keeps dropping, with another drop seen in the last episode of AEW Dynamite.
Khan has been trying to dominate the viewership war since AEW’s All In PPV beat WWE’s WrestleMania III record.

Since its inception, AEW has had steady viewership as a wrestling promotion. Despite being a new fish in the pond of the WWE, Impact Wrestling, Ring of Honor, and many others, it has a fanbase. Thanks to the released WWE stars using this promotion as their next home, AEW gained a reputation for being the next big thing after the WWE.
However, with Khan’s recent attempts to overthrow the WWE in the viewership war, AEW has suffered some massive drops. While fans and critics have called out Khan on his social media antics, others have shown stats on how his actions affect the company. This was made more evident with a post from Dave Meltzer.
Taking to his social media, Meltzer posted, “AEW did 782K/0.26 last night. No NBA last night either.” This is within the 18 to 49 demographic. It also dropped from last week‘s episode, which drew a 0.30 rating in the same demographic. AEW has always seen numbers over 800K, but last night’s Dynamite did not produce good numbers. This would be the second drop since October 2023, when the numbers fell to 609K.

In fact, the total viewership from this year to last year’s December is down by 10% (817,000 viewers in 2023 and 906,000 in 2022). While Khan tries to steady his company in this whirlwind of issues, the WWE has seen a massive rise in viewership. This comes after the return of CM Punk and Randy Orton in WWE.
How Khan made AEW’s fanbase turn against him
Many known figures in the wrestling industry have pointed towards Khan as the sole reason why AEW is losing views. While his social media antics are to be blamed, his booking has also been questioned.

The shoddy booking is the reason why Jade Cargill is now with the WWE. The mishandling of Punk is the reason why he returned to the WWE. Many people like Eric Bischoff have called Khan a bad manager and without knowledge about the sport.

Further, Tony Khan believes AEW is constantly under attack. “You do a great show, and the next day, somebody’s saying something negative. You do five great shows in a row, somebody says something negative. You break the ticket record for the most tickets ever sold for any wrestling show in the history of the world, and somebody has something bad to say about it,” he stated recently.
