To be Tony Khan means to be under the crosshairs of millions, at least that’s what Tony Khan believes. The promotion that began back in 2019 has often been criticized for being a rip-off of WWE. While that might not be the case, the belief that it might be has led people to criticize the promotion on various occasions. Again, at least that’s what Tony Khan believes. In a recent media scrum following ROH Final Battle, Khan cleared the air on the said attacks and how he feels about being the booker of the promotion.
Tony Khan talks about the attacks on AEW
Talking with the reporters present at the media scrum, the 41-year-old wrestling promoter opened up about how fans always find a way to criticize the show. He said, “To be AEW is to be under constant attack, you do a great show & the next day somebody’s saying something negative.” Khan added, “You do 5 great shows in a row, somebody’s saying something negative.” He further added that he was even criticized for the record-breaking ticket sales for his previous shows.

The AEW president further added that at this point, he has decided to ignore all critics. He said that now he just wants to do his best and keep on putting on great shows week after week. Khan also added that AEW Dynamite, which airs on Wednesdays every week, has been doing consistently good as compared to other shows that air on the same day.
As mentioned before AEW has faced backlash as being a ripoff of the Stamford-based promotion WWE. While this might not be true, Tony Khan has tried to fill a void left by another wrestling promotion. Back in the early 2000s, WWE had another competitor in the form of WCW. Fans are familiar that many WWE stars back in the day used to make a switch to WCW as the promotion was said to have better pay compared to WWE.

However, the rival of WWE back then failed due to various reasons. Since the inception of AEW, fans might have been closely monitoring AEW as they might be under the impression that it could end up becoming the next WCW. The Atlanta-based promotion was notorious for its commercial shift, thus sidelining pro wrestling.

This is the reason that might have led to AEW being extensively criticized. However, AEW might not be on the same trajectory as WCW. The promotion has a strong portfolio with its relationship with Warner Bros Discovery. Its weekly shows – Dynamite and Collision – air on Warner Bros-owned TBS and TNT networks respectively. Apart from that, there are rumors that AEW might soon find its new home at the media company owned (HBO) MAX. Do you think AEW deserves the criticism it faces?
