Tony Khan is constantly engaged in a battle against WWE because of the competitive relationship he shares with the leading wrestling promotion. Despite his best efforts, he often finds himself defeated in terms of viewership whenever AEW goes toe-to-toe against WWE on a day when both companies have scheduled events. Something similar has recently happened.

Every Saturday, wrestling fans are free to watch AEW Collision. However, interests clash when a WWE PLE is around the corner. In that case, fans often have to choose for themselves. Turns out, on 27th January, a lot of wrestling fans ignored AEW to tune into other sports.

Because of how well-established WWE’s fanbase is, it is not surprising to see AEW not being able to beat the viewership record set by the Stamford-based company. However, 27th January marked a record low for AEW as they noted the least set of eyeballs focusing on ‘Collision’ ever.

New statistics from WON tell us that AEW underperformed last Saturday while the wrestling community viewed Royal Rumble ’24. “Saturday’s AEW Collision averaged 300,000 viewers on TNT, down 32 percent from the previous week,” noted the industry insider. This was the lowest recorded viewership ‘Collision’ has ever had on a Saturday. The 18-19 demographic rating was as low as 0.06.

These records tell us that the fans were busy watching something else. Sports fans might have opted to watch the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA game that averaged 2.8 million viewers. However, assuming that wrestling fans stuck to wrestling, we can say that they must have tuned in to watch the Royal Rumble.

If AEW Collision’s low viewership wasn’t enough evidence pointing toward Royal Rumble’s success on a business level, then you may want to look at more reports pointing toward how WWE emerged supreme last weekend.

WWE created history on a landmark night adding salt to the wounds of AEW

The Stamford-based company is widely popular for breaking its records when it comes to marque events. Royal Rumble 2024 told a similar story. Reports from Fightful suggested that WWE saw its largest viewership in the history of the event on Saturday.

WWE itself revealed that the Tropicana Field bore witness to 48,044 fans. It was the largest audience ever recorded for a PLE outside of a WrestleMania event.

All of this testifies to the fact that Tony Khan does not carry the blame for amassing this lackluster record.
