Shane McMahon's China deal—Is this the game-changer WWE needed to crush AEW?

Tony Khan and Shane McMahon made headlines a few days ago because of a meeting they had at the Arlington airport. The content of that meetup is unknown, although Shane McMahon revealed afterward that he congratulated the President of All Elite Wrestling and discussed the benefits and difficulties of working in the wrestling business with the family. In recent months, there has been a lot of talk about the possibility of Shane McMahon coming to AEW now that he is not under contract with WWE.

Rumors arose about Vince McMahon’s son’s certain contacts with people from AEW, but Tony Khan came out to say that he had never spoken to Shane McMahon, although he wanted to make it clear that he has the doors of All Elite Wrestling open. Now, according to Eric Bischoff, this meetup is surely exciting, as he loved working alongside Shane McMahon. But what could be McMahon’s role in AEW? Would he be joining as a wrestler or as a backstage producer? Well, the answer to this was provided by the legendary manager on his 83 Weeks podcast.

He said, “Unless something changes, something changes rapidly, which brings me to Shane McMahon. I forgot all about that. It wasn’t even on my list to talk about, but how fun was that? Shane McMahon, Tony Khan in the room. Oh, that’s exciting. Let’s create some excitement. I don’t know if anything will happen. I don’t know what the meeting was about. I like Shane. I respect Shane. I would have liked to work more with Shane. I got to work with him a little bit in 2019 in his program with Kevin Owens. That was fun for me. I really enjoyed working with Kevin and Shane.”

Bischoff further added, “But yeah, Shane, hey, maybe, you know, I don’t know what Shane’s into right now. I know he was into a lot of distribution over in China. And perhaps that was a conversation, which would make sense. Perhaps Shane feels like he’s got something to prove.” The Chinese distribution that Bischoff is talking about is that McMahon’s company launched the first nationwide video-on-demand platform in China. They offered buy-at-home movies to the country as their citizens spend about $6 billion annually on pirated DVDs.

The possibility of Shane McMahon coming to AEW seems to be clearly on the table. It remains to be seen whether this meeting with Tony Khan was fruitful or not. At the moment, the last time fans saw Shane McMahon in a ring was at WrestleMania 39, when he had a sudden match of only a few seconds with The Miz, in which he tore his quadriceps. Since then, fans have been waiting to see the prince of the McMahon empire. In fact, even Jim Ross wants to see McMahon in AEW.

Have an interesting take?

He said, “If Shane could help us, help AEW, then Tony would hire him, and Shane would accept the offer. I had never seen that picture [of Khan and McMahon meeting]. That’s surprising. That’s pretty cool, actually. Shane, he could add a lot. He could do some physical things, within reason. He has great name identity. People who know he is. You don’t have to stop and explain, ‘This is Vince McMahon’s son.’ That goes without saying.”

He further added, “But if Tony’s an entrepreneur, and if he thought that Shane could help us in AEW, and if Shane thought he could have some fun, make a couple of paydays, I’m sure Shane is not in need of a significant cash influx, but he wants to have fun and contribute. Look, the wrestling business is in Shane’s blood. Where else does he go if he wants to stay in that vocation?”

At the moment, it’s unclear if Shane McMahon and Tony Khan are really interested in reaching a deal. However, Tony Khan himself has been very open to the possibility, and the meeting is a great indication that it could happen. What do you think? Will McMahon join the Jacksonville-based promotion?
