AEW and NJPW’s joint venture- Forbidden Door- had its second annual PPV on June 25 in Toronto, Canada. The event had prominent wrestlers from both promotions working with and against each other. One such match was between the Japanese company’s Will Ospreay and AEW’s Kenny Omega for the IWGP United States Championship.
The two wrestlers fought for nearly 40 minutes to give the audience a memorable match. Several fans also instantly termed it as the match of the year. However, one wrestling legend slammed AEW for ruining the match from becoming a classic.

Ospreay lost his IWGP United States Championship to Omega at Wrestle Kingdom in January. The British wrestler went all guns blazing to get back his gold from the hometown hero. There were some heavy blows traded by both the opponents and it also ended with the Canadian wrestler spilling blood, as the NJPW star used a screwdriver.
In the end, Will Ospreay managed to get back his championship after using a combination of moves to pin his formidable opponent. It helped that he has Don Callis by his side. Callis’ involvement didn’t go well with Bully Ray. The wrestling legend tore into Tony Khan’s company for the booking.
Callis was thrown out by the referee, but he still came out and played a vital role in tipping the scales in Ospreay’s favor.
“But that’s not the real real issue. Referee looks at Callis [and] says you’re out of here because you’re causing too many problems on the floor. Don Callis about 20 minutes later, comes back down to the ring. And what did the referee do? Dave, he came back. And why was he allowed to be at ringside?,” the WWE legend said on an episode of the Busted Open podcast.
He said the refereeing had to be more credible for fans to stay hooked. “I never got this sense of urgency from the referee like no way in hell are you coming back down here and blatantly dismissing a judgment call that I make,” Bully Ray said.
“You force me mentally out of the story,” he added. The 51-year-old said Callis could have been used better.
Don Callis was a major distraction in the match, reckons Bully Ray
Callis has a bitter-sweet kayfabe relationship with Omega. From being his close aid to backstabbing him, the two have dueled on the microphone in the last few weeks. So, it was no surprise that he would be a thorn in Omega’s side. But Bully Ray reckons Callis’ involvement took away the shine from the match.
“I’m so immersed in what is going on, and now I see a manager come back that got thrown out. I’m immediately saying, ‘Okay, why is the referee not throwing them out?’ You’ve taken my attention and you forced it on something that it should never be forced on,” the tag team legend said.

Not just that, some fans were upset with Omega underselling his own finisher, which has, in the past, always yielded a result. So, what’s your take on the match? Do you agree with Bully Ray’s sentiments? Let us know in the comments.
