Time and time again, talents from various independent circuits have proven their capabilities of printing money for big promotions. Classical examples would be CM Punk, Sami Zayn, LA Knight, and many more. It makes sense the promotion might want to secure an out-of-contract talent after his time with an independent circuit. Tony Khan has done just that.

While the president of AEW thought of revealing the name on the upcoming Pay Per View, MJF couldn’t contain his excitement and revealed who the new signee was.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) Tony Khan announced that the promotion has agreed to the terms of a well-known talent. Moreover, he admitted that the new recruit had amassed love and respect from the AEW fandom. He further added that the talent would come down to Los Angeles to sign the contract at the upcoming PPV, AEW Full Gear. It looked like Friedman was rather excited after hearing this announcement and tweeted the name of Flip Gordan.

Travis Lopes Jr. who goes by his ring name Flip Gordon, has played a key part in the independent circuit known as Ring of Honor. The circuit has been home to stars such as Adam Cole, AJ Styles, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, etc. So we could say that it emerged as a safe bet for Khan to sign a former Ring of Honor performer.

However, we should note that official confirmation on the topic hasn’t arrived yet. It might also be that MJF is trolling fans, something CM Punk has been doing lately.

Although it has given fans some hope, the chances are still quite bleak. After all, Gordon making his AEW debut might still be a far-fetched dream for many fans.

Will Flip Gordan make his AEW debut?

Gordan had a particularly long run with the Jacksonville-based independent circuit. After a year of joining Ring of Honor, Gordon earned the status as the breakout star in 2018. While The Elite that is Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and Hangman Page decided to move to AEW the next year, he chose to remain with ROH. In spring 2020, Gordon signed a new multi-year contract with Ring Of Honor. However, he found himself entering the free market involuntarily as the company released him in 2021 after AEW acquired the promotion. Since then, ROH has undergone a hiatus with major talents including Gordan earning their release from the AEW-acquired company.

As of July 2023, Gordon admitted that he did not wish to exclusively look to sign contracts with big promotions. According to him, he is happy with the pace he is going right now and he believes that this is right for him. Gordon further added that if a good and lucrative offer comes his way, he will not ignore it. But he is not interested in going down the rabbit hole of the development stage and then being later released by the promotion. Do you think MJF has dropped a hint or is he just messing with AEW fans?
