Tony Khan’s AEW has happened to land in hot water for all the wrong reasons. While the president recently stirred up some controversy following his comments on WWE’s booking, the company has always been known for its recurring backstage controversies. While the most talked about one has been the 2022 Brawl Out incident that happened after the AEW All Out that same year, another incident that happened at AEW All In in 2023 has been in the news lately. Recently, AEW’s top star talked about the incident that involved CM Punk and Jack Perry.

Tony Khan’s top star thinks the 2023 incident was minor

Recently talking with ESPN, the company’s recently crowned star, Samoa Joe, talked about the backstage brawl between Jack Perry and CM Punk. When asked about the details of the incident, Joe stated, “There was a little bit of an incident. We got it broken up.” The incident occurred just moments before the Second City Saint’s fight with Joe.

He further said, “We went out there and wrestled, man. That’s the gist of it.” As the star tried to explain the altercation, he added, “Everybody wants it to be a lot more than what it is, but that’s what it was.”

He concluded by saying, “And to speak any more on it would be pointless unless you’re trying to get a scorecard and stuff — but trust me, it wasn’t that type of a fight.”

The incident gained notoriety because it led to Punk’s firing from AEW. While many might want to know what exactly happened, the reason why it started was something unexpected.

How did the infamous brawl start?

During the pre-show at AEW All In 2023, Jack Perry did a spot that involved a car window during his fight with Hook. After the match concluded, Perry looked at the camera and said, “It’s real glass, cry me a river.” Many were confused as to why Perry said that. It was later revealed that the Jungle Boy fired shots at Punk as the WWE star had opposed Perry’s idea of using real glass on an episode of AEW Collison, a few weeks before All In.

Following this, Punk rushed backstage to confront Perry on his comments. The two at first exchanged some words and things escalated quickly. Soon, the duo ended up in a physical altercation and the brawl had to be broken up by others. Following the incident, Punk was released from AEW while Perry was suspended. While Punk has made his way to WWE, Perry has made his debut at New Japan Pro Wrestling.
