Things have changed in the WWE Universe. A lot has happened since the 2024 Royal Rumble, despite it being less than a month ago. Cody Rhodes won the rumble but is now facing a major hurdle in the form of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. While initially it was hinted that Johnson might face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40, the plans were scrapped after a massive fan backlash. Now Rhodes will get to face Reigns. However, he has to go through Hollywood Rock first. Amidst all this chaos and WWE changing Rhodes’ story frequently, is there a possibility that The American Nightmare might want to go back to AEW?

The bridge between Cody Rhodes and WWE might have burned

It was reported that when WWE laid out the plan in which Johnson would be facing off against Roman Reigns instead of him at WrestleMania 40, Rhodes agreed to it as he respects the company and its creative decisions. Even though WWE has changed the creative plan, things might have turned sour between both parties. Rhodes had been receiving massive support from WWE up until Johnson came into the picture. While he does have a lot of support from fans, if WWE is planning to not go anywhere with his story after pushing him so much will leave everyone, including him, disappointed.

Apart from burned bridges, there is one more reason that might prompt him to leave WWE. It has been heavily rumored that WWE wants Roman Reigns to break Hulk Hogan’s record. The record in question is the days the star has held the championship belt. Hogan’s record was 1,474 days and Reigns is coming close to that number as he has crossed 1200 days.

If WWE wants Reigns to break Hogan’s record, Rhodes might have to loose once again this year. This will leave everyone sour and Rhodes will want to quite WWE regardless of the offers presented to him by the company.

Maybe these rumors might have reached Tony Khan by now. If the word is to be trusted, Khan might have already begun preparations to welcome Rhodes back.

Is AEW waiting for The American Nightmare?

Rhodes has a special connection with AEW. While he was one of the elites who helped Tony Khan set up the promotion, he developed his American Nightmare gimmick there. And while he might or might not miss AEW, the promotion sure does miss him. The word around the town is that AEW has sent him a contract.

While it is a rumor, considering the current scenario, it is something that fans can’t let slide. The rumors suggest that AEW has sent Rhodes a contract wanting him to return. However, he has not signed it yet. Questions like whether he does have the contract or not and whether will he return to AEW will all be answered after WrestleMania 40.
