The Wednesday Night Wars are in full swing as AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT go head-to-head each week. Both brands bring great pro wrestling to our screens, and both have top names to draw the numbers. But there is one aspect where AEW falls short, and that is their Women’s Division.

WCW Star Disco Inferno shoots on AEW Women’s World Championship Eliminator Tournament

A couple of weeks ago, AEW announced a sixteen women eliminator tournament to crown the new #1 Contender for Hikaru Shida’s AEW Women’s World Championship. They announced no details until this week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite.

The tournament’s participants feature many Joshi wrestlers from Japan. Eight women will represent the United States, while eight women will represent Japan.

In fact, the matches will take place in both countries. Former WCW Television Champion and Booker, Disco Inferno, had an interesting take on this.

Honestly, Disco Inferno isn’t wrong. The WCW and Impact Wrestling veteran has made a logical point. AEW presents itself as a company that wants to make new stars and draw more casual fan attention, but bringing unfamiliar Joshi wrestlers won’t do any good.

Who are the tournament participants?

All Elite Wrestling might not have big female superstars on their roster, but they have enough contracted and freelancing women wrestlers. So, getting unfamiliar talent from Japan is vague.

The United States Bracket of the tournament features NWA Women’s World Champion Serena Deeb, Riho, Dr. Britt Baker, Tay Conti, Thunder Rosa, Nyle Rose, Anna Jay, and Leyla Hirsch.

The Japan bracket features Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki, Veny, Emi Sakura, Ryo Mizunami, Mei Suruga, Rin Kadokura, and Maki Itoh. These are undoubtedly some talented women from Japan, but when you think about Disco’s point, it all makes sense.

AEW’s Women’s Tag Team Tournament fell flat on its face. We just hope the same doesn’t happen with the Women’s Championship eliminator tournament.
