Everyone in the pro wrestling world is aware of The New Day. The team of Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods make up one of the most iconic tag teams in WWE history and had the longest tag title reign in WWE history at 483 days.
However, their iconic name actually came after a few discussions. Former WWE and current AEW superstar Chris Jericho revealed the stable had a completely different name when they were starting out.
When someone is breaking into sports wrestling, they are given a stage name or a ring name for entertainment purposes. The ring name could be derived from the gimmick or the appearance. John Cena, Randy Orton, Riddle are some of the lucky few who got to keep their real name as their ring name.

While talking to Matt Lee and Jeff Parker of 2.0, f.k.a. Ever-Rise (in WWE), ‘Le Champion,’ discussed that in WWE, people get the most bizarre names! The New Day also had a strange name.
“That’s what New Day was. Their original name was literally, this is not a joke, ‘Fresh Coat of Paint’,” Jericho revealed on the ‘Talk is Jericho’ podcast. “They decided on New Day basically right before. If you think about (it), what does that even mean? Even ‘New Day’, what does that even mean?”
This piece of information came from Xavier Woods himself. Hence, there is no way to question it. Even the name of Ever-Rise was a sudden last-minute decision.

How was The New Day formed?
Back in the mid-2010s, Kingston, E and Woods were all suffering from lows in their career. At first, E and Woods started pitching ideas together and Kingston joined later on. Initially, there were plans for Sasha Banks to join them.
On July 21, Woods came down and addressed Kofi and Big E after the duo suffered a loss on SmackDown. He proclaimed they would not “get ahead by kissing babies and shaking hands,” hinting at a new beginning.
Following a victory on WWE Main Event, The New Day was taken off-screen as the creative team was still doubtful over the gimmick. Later on, they debuted as a heroic black gospel group and were intended to be babyfaces.
But the crowd hated the idea and constantly chanted, “New Day Sucks.” As a response, the men turned heel. However, they turned face when their new ‘Power of Positivity’ got popular. The crowds were now chanting “New Day Rocks.”
Then followed several accolades. The New Day are the longest-reigning tag team champions in history, where all three were considered champions and defended the title under the Freebird rule.
They have the most reigns as SmackDown Tag Team Champions (seven). and are overall 11-time tag team champions in the company. WWE recently recognized them as the best tag team in history.
