Is MJF truly overrated, or are WWE veterans just jealous of his rising stardom in AEW?

Maxwell Jacob Friedman, better known as MJF, has had an outstanding career, mainly in All Elite Wrestling. Since his debut, MJF has been one of the most polarizing and entertaining characters in the promotion, known as much for his skill on the microphone as for his talent in the ring. MJF has had the honor of holding the world title. Establishing himself as one of the company’s primary stars.

The Devil has been a part of notable rivalries against figures such as Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, and Cody Rhodes, delivering some of AEW’s most remembered promos and segments. With his mix of charisma, technical ability, and a personality that appeals to fans and detractors alike, MJF continues to be a central figure in the evolution of AEW and professional wrestling in general. So what happens when someone criticizes the AEW superstar and calls him overrated?

Well, if you’re as good as MJF, he has supporters who come out in his defense. One such legend of the business who came out in support of the heel was Bully Ray. On the Busted Open Podcast, Bully Ray talked about the latest edition of AEW Dynamite. During the discussion, he revealed that Tony Khan had a matchup between MJF and Ospreay to boost the ratings of the show.

Something that shows the trust the AEW President has in the current greatest heel in wrestling. So when someone like WWE veteran Road Dogg calls MJF overrated, Bully Ray labelled it a wrong opinion. He said, “And I’ve come across other veterans in the business who say, nah, the kid’s overrated. And I said, No, he’s not. He’s not overrated. He might be a little pompous. He might have a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. He might have a little bit of a big head early on in his career, but every wrestler goes through it. Max is still very young, but he’s really, really good at what he does. And he’s very underrated when it comes to his in-ring ability.”

However, Bully Ray isn’t the only veteran who seems to be a fan of the AEW star. Another ECW legend loves the heel persona of the new AEW International Champion. So much so that he compared the modern-era villain to arguably one of the GOATS of heels in pro wrestling history, Rowdy Roddy Piper. Someone who truly defined what being a heel means in pro wrestling.

MJF gets compared to the GOAT

AEW star MJF surely has received a lot of praise in his run with the Jacksonville-based promotion. According to veteran wrestler Tommy Dreamer, the former AEW World Champion is one of the most unique superstars that he’s ever seen. MJF delivered a promo a few weeks ago on Dynamite, which the ECW legend found very interesting. He even went as far as to claim that it reminded him of the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

Have an interesting take?

Dreamer explained that Piper as a heel was one of the best. But his babyface runs were unique because he said what he wanted. Something he feels the AEW star does when he’s working as a babyface. He said, “He (MJF) was so confident in his speaking, and the way he would do things reminded me of him [Piper]. So, I mean, I’m comparing him to great comedians and great pro-wrestlers holding your attention because that audience last night was hanged on every word that he said.”

The veteran also praised Rush for being able to hold his own in the promotion, even though English was his second language and fans were against him. MJF returned to AEW Double or Nothing 2024, where he faced Adam Cole and confirmed that he had re-signed with Tony Khan’s company. Now, he is already the AEW International Champion, truly proving that he is still the reliable superstar that AEW trusts with the top gold. What do you think? Is MJF overrated?
