This FIFA Women’s World Cup saw the US as one of its favorites to win the tournament. But as it often happens in sports, they were surprisingly ousted in the round of 16 by Sweden. A plethora of backlash also found its way for the women’s team. The criticizing comments are still pouring in, but the USWNT has received the backing of Rennae Stubbs, former coach of Serena Williams.

The hate for the US Women’s National Team has been rather intense after their elimination. Twitter users are chastising the players for taking a political stance during their matches and not singing the national anthem. Along with the players, Megan Rapinoe was also lambasted by American fans for her overt opinions on several political matters in the country.

Serena Williams’ former coach backs USWNT

The round of 16 match between the USA and Sweden did not pan out how American fans would’ve hoped. Heavy favorites in the tournament, the US team scraped by after two draws in the group stages. Not being able to score against Sweden, the match went into penalties, where the Swedes emerged victorious. Following their exit, the women’s soccer team of the US was nothing but the target of backlash. 

While they kept receiving hate comments, Rennae Stubbs, the former coach of Serena Williams, was quick to aid them. The Australian coach and presenter was seething as she watched the bashing of the soccer player. On her Instagram and X pages, she shared a message for all lambasting the team.  

The Vitriol being thrown at the @uswnt by some people in this country is astounding to me! These women bust their asses everyday to win games, represent their country with pride & u have people actually pulling against them because they don’t like the way they fought for equal treatment of others and because they have tried to take advantage of their status as football players to make money in advertising and other ventures.”

Her anger did not end there. She would further go on to chastise the users for feeling jealous and being unpatriotic.

The jealousy, unpatriotic nature of the vitriol is just outrageous. You should check yourself and your “national pride” before u utter disgraceful words to those that are only trying to do one thing, win for you and your flag.”

By simply surfing on the X platform, one can see that there the disdain for the players of the USWNT is still going strong. However, more and more support will pour in as well.
