At the mere age of 17, the soccer legend, Marta Vieira da Silva, also known as Marta, made her FIFA World Cup debut for the Brazilian national side. Ever since the Orlando Pride star has established an unparalleled legacy in the tournament with her stellar prowess. Particularly in 2007, when the 37-year-old helped her country to reach the championship match with her massive seven goals contribution in the World Cup.

On top of all this, the NWSL player has also bagged six FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year awards during her illustrious journey. Now, after almost two decades of her remarkable legacy, Marta has decided to bid adieu to the most prestigious soccer event. Taking note of the same, the American tennis legend, Billie Jean King recently took to social media as she penned a heartfelt message for her.

The 37-year-old player recently marked her sixth participation in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. However, after some decent performances, the Brazilian national side has now been knocked out of the group stage of the tournament. Prior to the soccer event, Marta announced that it would be a farewell to the World Cup following their campaign.

Now, as the all-time leading World Cup scorer in both the men’s and women’s, she is bidding adieu to the tournament. Taking note, the tennis legend, Billie Jean King was quite emotional as she paid a touching tribute to Marta on her Twitter account. The Hall of Famer said, “Congratulations to Marta on an outstanding, history-making career. She is an icon, and remains the all-time leading World Cup scorer, men’s or women’s.”

Rhe soccer star will continue to play in the NWSL for her current club, Orlando Pride. Notably, the 12 singles Grand Slam champion added, “We wish her the best, and look forward to watching the next steps in her journey. She’s not done yet.”

Apart from Marta, the former tennis ace recently hailed another legendary female athlete in the sporting community.

Jean King recently paid tribute to her young compatriot

After putting down her racket, the Hall of Famer has coached a number of prominent figures in the women’s circuit. One such player was the American star, Lindsay Davenport. She played  under the former tennis ace’s tutelage during the 1996 Olympics. Back then, the 47-year-old bagged her first-ever gold medal by outclassing her opponent, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Reminiscing about her incredible triumph in the Olympics, Jean King recently hailed her young compatriot on Twitter. She said, “It was so special to watch Lindsay win in front of family and friends.“
