Coco Gauff's early Paris exit—Does she have what it takes to win gold in LA 2028?

The reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff is hell-bent on getting an Olympic gold. Despite leaving the court with tears in her eyes, Gauff isn’t ready to accept her defeat. The American sensation is aiming to repeat the feat of Serena Williams and keep tennis alive in the country. While attending the Canadian Open, she delved into her plan, showing why she is still the queen of tennis!

Gauff attended the Paris Olympics as a debutante since she couldn’t participate in the Tokyo Olympics as she contracted COVID-19. This reigning US Open champion participated in all three categories, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles but failed to secure a medal. Given that Gauff was dedicated to her country, her defeat in all three left her disappointed. However, Gauff is not a person who would let failure overtake her being.

In a pre-tournament press conference at the Canadian Open, Gauff was asked whether she would prefer to participate in all three categories in the 2028 LA Olympics. With absolute confidence, she responded, “Yeah I mean honestly I didn’t really experience a full effect so like kind of lost earlier in singles so at that point I think I was I didn’t even double up yet so I would still do all three again if that’s a possibility in 28, I mean it’s four years from now.” From Gauff’s statement, it’s clear she didn’t take her defeat well and looks forward to rectifying her lackluster results.

Now that she returns to the American hard-court swing, Gauff will look forward to defending the two titles she won last year. The Citi Open clashed with the Olympics, and she could not participate. However, she will now look to defend her title at the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. She is bound to be ferocious as she would aim to do away with the troubling results of the last few months.

Gauff’s statement showed her as strong and confident, but she also had an unfortunate moment during her match against Donna Vekic at the Paris Olympics.

This led to an argument between chair umpire Jaume Campistol and Gauff. A supervisor also was called on the court to resolve the issue. Gauff argued that the point should be played again, given the call was made right before she hit the ball. However, the reigning US Open champion was spotted leaving the court teary-eyed.

There’s been multiple times this year where that happened to me, where I feel like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court, And I feel like in tennis, we should have a VR system because these points are big deals. Usually, afterwards, they apologize, so it’s kind of frustrating when the sorry doesn’t help you once the match is over, she said.

Despite everything, Gauff’s confidence and enthusiasm for LA deserve a round of applause. Following such dedication, people want Gauff to work even harder and show who is the boss in the LA Olympics 2028. Will she be able to earn the medal she so desperately wants?
