Coco Gauff is all set for Paris but has not forgotten her ill-fated moment four years back. Contracting COVID-19 at that time, Gauff was forced to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics, a major blow after spending many sleepless nights in excitement. Four years later, the 20-year-old American will now be able to fight for a medal. Right before starting her journey in Paris, Gauff takes a moment to share how her relationship with her idol Serena Williams changed and how it shaped her confidence this time.

Gauff penned a note to her 17-year-old self in an exclusive for NBC Olympics. Mentioning how much this American WTA star “relish the relationships” with her teammates, Gauff writes feeling “lucky” that her “on-court relationships have turned into off-court friendships.” She proudly mentions that her idol, Serena Williams too holds a position in her life. “One of those notable friendships is with your idol, Serena Williams. Serena was once just a stranger printed on a poster hanging in your room, and now you still can’t believe she’s a friend and mentor,” Gauff said.

This friendship has not only helped Gauff with mentorship, which is a dream come true for millions, but offered her a zeal to be the torch-bearer of Williams’ legacy in the Olympics. “Her profound impact on tennis, what it means to be a champion and to break barriers is a legacy you hope to uphold and carry with you into your first Olympic Games.”

A few days back this 20-year-old American WTA star received The Best Tennis Player award from ESPYs 2024 from the host, Serena Williams. Delighted with the result and the opportunity to share the stage with her idol, the US Open champion was unable to contain her excitement. “hahaha i am loving @serenawilliams hosting the #ESPYS24,” said Gauff.

While her admiration for the Queen of the Court is clear as day, she has no plans on becoming another Serena Williams, “People compare me to Serena, but I’ve never said, I want to be her. I just want to be me. I want to have my own story. My life, my rule is to just dream big and let’s see what.“
