Critics call Gauff immature—Is her response justified or should she focus solely on her game?

“Kids have the best outlook on life,” Coco Gauff wrote while taking a dig at a fan who called her a kid. The American sensation was unhappy with a section of fans calling her out for winning only small tournaments like the WTA 250 events. As a result, she hit back by showing off her China Open victory, a WTA 1000 event. Subsequently, one of the fans felt that Gauff was immature to react this way, which started a heated argument. However, in the interview today, the former US Open champion clarified about the turn of events.

Gauff is currently participating in the Wuhan Open and she is off to a brisk start, defeating Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. During the post-match press conference after her win, she was asked about the extent to which these verbal exchanges with the fans affected her. The American sensation, as always, gave a candid response.

“For me it’s just like you’ll never satisfy anybody. We ended up ending it on good terms. It wasn’t like a feud. The person thought I was immature. Honestly, I approach almost every tournament in the mindset of me as a kid. How I approached Beijing, I was like I want to approach this how I would play tennis as a kid. Sometimes as I’m becoming more of an adult, I think I realize or lose my inner child in a way. The world can be harsh,” Gauff said.

However, later, the fan revealed that it wasn’t out of disrespect for Gauff and that she should stay away from X to which she replied, “I love u too! I’m bored and procrastinating on packing. I don’t even have the app downloaded I use it on the website to avoid going on it but everyone now and then I like to pop in and see what’s poppin lol.”

There has been a lot going on in Coco Gauff’s career of late. She recently separated from her coach, Brad Gilbert after the US Open. Subsequently, she appointed Matt Daly to replace Gilbert, which has worked wonders for the American sensation. The new pairing of Gauff and Daly tasted instant success in Beijing and she looks rejuvenated now.

With the sport becoming more competitive nowadays, winning streaks are a rare phenomenon in today’s times. Very few players are able to go many matches unbeaten. Thus, when Gauff’s critics pointed out her poor results this year, she emphasized that winning and losing are part and parcel of the sport and she can’t keep winning all the time.

The American sensation said, “People don’t realise people have great moments in sports and bad moments. It doesn’t mean anything. I took inspiration from A’ja Wilson.” For the unversed, Wilson is a back-to-back WNBA champion with Las Vegas Aces. Talking further about her, Gauff continued, “She’s kind of like, ‘It’s hard to stay winning all the time. You need to go through losses to realize what you need to do to evolve’. Tennis fans need to be more accepting of that.”

Interestingly, Gauff is on a seven-match winning streak with her first-round win at the Wuhan Open. Up next, she will face Marta Kostyuk in the second round tomorrow. Can she continue her winning streak and win the title in Wuhan? Let us know your views in the comments below.
