Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams have an interesting connection. During the 2018 US Open, the Japanese star defeated Williams in the summit clash to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title. It was an ill-tempered match, with the American legend losing her cool. Nonetheless, it was a special moment for Osaka, who tasted glory for the first time. Fast forward to 2024, and the connection between the two has again come to light. And it is one of the reasons Osaka has regrets after the Australian Open.

Earlier today, Osaka bowed out of the Grand Slam Down Under after a defeat against Caroline Garcia of France. The latter served brilliantly and didn’t give Osaka any chance in the match. But Osaka’s remorse is only tangentially related to the game.

Subsequently, during the post-match press conference, she was asked about her emotions at the tournament. While she detailed her comeback memories after becoming a mother, Osaka also narrated a regret about her outfit. She said, “I’m a little sad ’cause this outfit’s really cool and you won’t see it again (laughter). That’s why I had to wear it in here.”

Nike has had a long association with the Japanese tennis star. Her Australian Open outfit, designed especially for the Grand Slam, highlights their deep-rooted relationship. However, with her journey cut short, fans won’t be able to spot the dress that resembled Serena Williams’ outfit once.
