Compton might be the city where Venus and Serena Williams started their training to become arguably the greatest tennis players in the Open Era. However, for the sisters, it holds more value than that. Along with many sweet memories, both Venus and Serena Williams share a traumatic memory of the loss of their half-sister, Yetunde Price. Recently, they became nostalgic after spending time with their late sister’s son, and they could not help but gush like proud aunts.
Challenges, heckling, and irritated opponents were a common picture in the lives of the two tennis legends. However, the biggest challenge was to get over the loss of their sister.

The Williams sisters suffered a major mental setback in 2003 when they lost their sister to gun violence in Compton. As a matter of fact, the loss came just a mile and a half away from the tennis court where the two sisters trained.
Eventually, they dealt with the loss but never forgot Price. Last year, when her son posed with his aunt Venus Williams, both the aunts could not help but gush over how he looked exactly like Yetunde Price. While uploading a picture with his aunt, he stated, “Eyes lazy like my momma, I love this picture.”
Serena Williams loved how amazing they both looked. She commented, “Send us this phot it’s great.”

Yetunde Price was an integral part of their life while they were active on the court. She was working as their off-court manager, and on-court nurse while they were active on the tour. So, seeing someone so close leave them too soon was heartbreaking for the sisters.
How did the loss of Price change the Serena’s perspective?
After Serena Williams got to know about the demise of her half-sister, Yetunde Price, she took on a new approach to life. She told the Guardian that she got into an introspective spree and wondered if she was playing tennis because her father taught her to or because her elder sister Venus Williams was playing it. Conclusively, she decided that the day she fell out of love with tennis, she will quit the sport.
