Serena Williams is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and loved tennis players of all time. And now, with her retirement, and another baby coming, she has peacefully settled down, enjoying downtime with her family, However, things were not always this flowery. From her struggles on the court to bringing Olympia into the world, Williams has gone through a lot.

However, she doesn’t have any hard feelings towards the curveballs that life threw at her. In a candid interview, she stated how her moments of “suffering” became valuable life lessons.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion started as an underdog on the WTA tour in 1995. Eventually, she came to be one of the most feared opponents and a force to be reckoned with on the court. Despite that, she had quite a few issues both on and off the court.

In an interview with Marie Claire, Serena recognized all such struggles and focused on the lesson derived from them. She stated, “I have to think about it … Everything you live and that makes you suffer leads you to try very hard to overcome that moment.”

She added, “In those periods you just try to understand how to do it better and move on. I think part of the suffering is just understanding it, going through it, and realizing that you can go on.” She concluded by saying, “That’s why I can’t say what was the worst moment. I really don’t know.”

On the professional front, a few controversial moments do come to mind when we look back at her career. For instance, her on-court meltdown during the 2009 US Open semi-finals against Kim Clijsters. The line judge called a foot fault which eventually awarded two match points to her opponent. Clijsters eventually ended up winning the match.

Apart from that, she also had a controversial on-court outburst during the 2018 US Open when she lost in the finals against Naomi Osaka. The chair umpire penalized Williams for receiving “illegal” coaching from the sidelines by Patrick Mouratoglou. Williams had a heated argument with the chair umpire which made headlines. Moreover, she received a lot of criticism for the incident.

Apart from these incidents, the major scare came when she gave birth to her daughter Olympia.

Williams nearly died while giving birth to Olympia

2017 was one of the happiest and also a scary year in the life of Serena Williams. She had just won her 23rd Grand Slam title while pregnant.

However, while giving birth to Olympia, she faced a life-threatening situation. Moreover, the threat did not end there. She even faced recurring almost fatal issues after giving birth to her daughter.
