If some young tennis player reveals the news of dating someone from the entertainment realm, it surely will hit the headlines. But the lack of deep focus on that aspect of their lives is something that former world no. 1 Tracy Austin has felt.
In an interview with Express Sport, three-time Grand Slam champion Tracy Austin expressed her discontent with the lack of dating tabloid culture. She stated, “We don’t see a lot of it now.”
She gave an example of tennis legend Chris Evert. Austin stated, “With Chrissie dating Burt Reynolds and engaged to Jimmy and then she marries John Lloyd, that might pull in some fans who are not interested in sport and cross-courts and backhand lobs, you know what I’m saying?”
Her intention was to expand the realm of sports to people who are interested in other things. Due to this celebrity dating culture, a lot more fans can get attracted to the sport.
She added, “There were a lot of just the tennis players you’ve got to respect them as champions but celebrities.” Giving her own example, she stated, “When I came home I was on so many different shows that didn’t have anything to do with tennis. So it kind of crossed over the barrier of just sports.”
According to Austin, the lack of the same has obstructed the growth of the tennis fanbase. Nonetheless, we have seen the dating life drama of high-profile tennis players hitting the headlines once in a while even now.
