The year 2003 is a special one in the life of the former World Number 1, Justine Henin. At the French Open that year, she won her maiden Grand Slam title, defeating Kim Clijsters in the finals. It took years of hard work for the Belgium tennis star to clinch victory on the sport’s biggest stage. Years after claiming this special victory, Henin revealed why it was indeed a memorable win for her.
Justine Henin had a turbulent childhood. She lost her mother when she was just 12 years old. Earlier, she even had to shift base to pursue her tennis dream. Her hard work was justified when she clinched the 2003 French Open title.

Hours ago, Justin Henin was featured in Roland Garros’ latest episode of Memories of a Champion. During that show, she talked about various subjects – from her mother’s dream to her greatest rivalries. Additionally, she reminisced about her first major title in 2003.
Talking about this, she said, “In 2003, it was very special because it was my first Grand Slam, and for me, it was a culmination, a dream come true, the achievement of a lifetime. It was pretty much everything I had lived for since I was a child. I’d made a promise to my mum, who passed away by then so it wasn’t really a promise but rather an assertion.”
Further, Henin added, “I really wanted to achieve this goal from where she was, she could be reassured. It was really a way for me to tell her, ‘You see, I made my dream come true, you can rest assured, everything is fine.’ So of course, it was very special.”
Even though Henin’s victory at the French Open was essential, it was also made special due to one additional reason. She defeated her greatest rival in that tournament.

Justine Henin overcame Serena Williams’ challenge
During the recent episode of Memories of a Champion, Henin also called Serena her greatest rival. The two also went up against each other at the 2003 Roland Garros. Henin and Serena Williams had contrasting paths to the semifinal where they met.
Despite Williams being the top seed and favorite to win that match, Henin caused a massive upset to defeat the American legend 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to set up the summit clash with her compatriot, Kim Clijsters. Henin later prevailed over Clijsters in straight sets to win the title.
