Some of the top-ranked players on the women’s tour are currently competing in the ongoing round-robin event in Cancun. Justifying the high standards set by the past editions, the initial matches of this season’s WTA Finals have delivered some high-octane tennis. However, the outdoor hard court event is now nearing its conclusion, with only a few group-stage matches remaining.

One such group encounter will take place between the WTA superstars, Maria Sakkari and Jessica Pegula. It will be an interesting watch as one player is on an incredible winning streak while the other will look to make amends for her recent defeats.

With a strong start to her campaign, Jessica Pegula sizzled past Elena Rybakina in the first group stage match of the season-ending championship. In her next matchup in Cancun, the fifth-seeded American later stunned the entire tennis realm by defeating the new world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, 6-4, 6-3. With two victories now in her bag, the 29-year-old has already secured a place in the semifinals of the WTA Finals.

Maria Sakkari, on the other hand, has been far away from her best levels throughout the outdoor hard court event. The Greek tennis star tasted her first defeat at the hands of her top-seeded Belarusian opponent. Despite delivering a decent performance in her next match, the former world No. 3 was once again outperformed by Elena Rybakina, 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. Now that she has faced two consecutive defeats in the group round fixtures, Sakkari has failed to advance to the latter stages of the WTA Finals.

Prediction: Jessica Pegula to clinch another victory in Cancun

The 29-year-old is on a roll in the ongoing WTA Finals, outshining the likes of Grand Slam title winners Sabalenka and Rybakina. Even though she has already qualified for the semis, Pegula will now look to maintain her winning streak as she will most likely prevail in her match against the out-of-form Greek player.
