With the conclusion of group stage matches, it’s now all lined up for the semifinal rounds of the WTA Finals. Just four participants from among the top-ranked WTA superstars have advanced to the latter stages of the outdoor hardcourt tournament taking place in Cancun. The American tennis duo and close friends, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, are also among the four semifinalists vying for glory in the season-ending championship.
Instead of playing together as a doubles team, the WTA superstars will now square off against each other in Cancun. Given that the top two ranked American players on the circuit are facing off against one another and both are in excellent form, it should be an incredible show.

Coco Gauff vs. Jessica Pegula: Group stage match preview
Coco Gauff had a spectacular start to the WTA Finals, showcasing her newfound prominence as the third-ranked player on the circuit. In the opening group stage match, the American tennis prodigy prevailed over the sixth seed, Ons Jabeur, as she enjoyed a comfortable victory, 6-0, 6-1. But in her second match, the recently crowned Grand Slam champion was defeated by Iga Świątek while conceding a bagel, 6-0, 7-5. The 19-year-old later secured a place in the semifinals after prevailing in a thrilling encounter against Markéta Vondroušová, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, has been dominating and has made easy progress to the semifinals while on a winning streak. The American faced Elena Rybakina in her opening match, which she won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Later, the 29-year-old was up against the new world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, whom she comfortably defeated and advanced to the latter round. Maintaining her winning streak, the former world No. 3 also brushed aside Maria Sakkari in another straight-set match.
Coco Gauff vs. Jessica Pegula: Head-to-Head Record
This semifinal of the round-robin event will mark the fourth meeting between the American tennis duo on the women’s tour. This season, Gauff and Pegula have faced each other two times, with their first encounter taking place at the Rothesay International, where the former won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
But in their next meeting at the Montreal Open, it was the 29-year-old who triumphed in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. With a current 2-1 advantage over her close buddy on the tour, Pegula leads the head-to-head record.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula to prevail in the All-American matchup
Even though both the American players are in incredible form, it is the 29-year-old who will clinch a victory against her doubles partner. Jessica Pegula is on a remarkable winning streak and has not dropped a single set in the hard-court event, which makes her the favorite to proceed to the championship match.
