Zina Garrison, a legend of the game made history by becoming the first black woman to play a major final at Wimbledon in 1990 since Althea Gibson. In a recent interview, she expressed her thoughts about the current state of women’s tennis.

She said that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) had experienced a period where the growth was stopped for a certain time. However, Garrison sees a promising change on the horizon with the emergence of young American talent Coco Gauff.

In Garrison’s eyes, Gauff is the person who’ll be taking forward the WTA’s identity. The 19-year-old player has captured the attention of the nation with her remarkable performances. “To me, it’s been in a lull for a couple of years now, without having any personality. It’s like the Women’s Tennis Association didn’t have an identity, and she’s bringing back the identity,” said Garrison as per the New York Times, about Coco Gauff and the way she is changing the tennis world.

In an interview a few months back, Billie Jean King, another legendary figure in the tennis world revealed that Coco Gauff is the reason why she fought so hard 50 years back. Not only this, she also revealed how her grandmother played an essential role in shaping the future of Coco Gauff.

“When I see her, she’s the reason we fought so hard 50 years ago. I think she’s such a force. It comes from her grandmother. Her grandmother was the first Black child to go to an all-white school in Delray. To hear her story, if you’re a granddaughter & you’re hearing your grandmother talk about going to a white school, being the only Black child, I think she’s such a force. I want her to be happy, number one,” said Billie Jean King while talking about Coco Gauff.
