Now, the tournament has returned to the circuit and the greatest stars in the WTA Tour will have a chance at glory.

Albeit a 500 event in the ATP, it is a 1000 event on the women’s tour. When it first began, the tournament in Beijing was a WTA Tour Tier II and saw participation from a handful of the stars of the game. After the category was abandoned in 2009, Beijing became a WTA Premier Mandatory tournament where winners of the tournament were awarded 1000 points.

WTA then abandoned categorizing tournaments in the premier format and adopted a style that is the same as the ATP. Absent due to COVID-19 and the Peng Shui assault allegations, the tournament is back in full swing now, officially as a WTA 1000 event. To match the points awarded to the winners, the tournament also offers a record-breaking prize money after a three-year absence.
