Who will Iga Swiatek‘s next coach be? This was a question that was a hot topic in the tennis world. Ever since her separation from ex-coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, many names were proposed to join her coaching team. However, all of this came to an end yesterday when she announced that Naomi Osaka‘s ex-coach Wim Fisette will be her new mentor. But, what does that change mean for Iga? Here’s what a prominent psychologist had to say about her decision to team up with Osaka’s ex-coach.
Artur Orzełowski, a well-known psychologist, has commended Iga Swiatek’s choice to work with renowned coach Wim Fissette. According to Orzełowski, Swiatek’s decision was rational and well thought out, given Fissette’s experience working with top athletes. “It’s not a matter of sensitivity. He has the tools to work with people who are in a given state. Iga chose rationally,” Orzełowski exp lained emphasizing the coach’s ability to handle the psychological well-being of athletes.
Fissette previously worked with Naomi Osaka for over a year. This was his second stint with her. He previously worked with her back in 2020-22. Osaka, on multiple occasions, through different mediums has openly discussed her struggles with depression. This background, Orzełowski pointed out, makes him an ideal mentor for Swiatek, as he has dealt with similar challenges in the past. “This person has the tools, he worked with a person who was depressed,” Orzełowski added, referencing Fissette’s work with Osaka.

For Swiatek, having a coach who understands both the physical and mental demands of the game is crucial. Orzełowski believes this partnership will protect Swiatek from facing mental health struggles herself, stating, “It’s great that she has a trainer who has the tools to protect her from this.”
Talking further about Iga Swiatek, she suggested that she went too far for her success and that she lost multiple things on the way.

During the conversation, Artur shed light on the sacrifices Iga Swiatek made to reach the top of the tennis world. While Swiatek’s fame, success, and wealth are clearly visible, the psychologist talked about the less visible emotional toll of her journey. “We see Iga at the top, who is famous, has millions, and we forget about something like loneliness at the top. We forget that when she climbed to the top, it was associated with many sacrifices,” he explained.
He pointed out that fame and money do not shield anyone from tough emotions or mental challenges. In Swiatek’s case, the pressure of staying at the top brings its own struggles. “Perhaps Iga realizes that if she does not take care of her health, she will fall into depression and will have several years of treatment ahead of her,” he added.

Iga Swiatek, on multiple occasions, has also talked about how the scheduling crisis has taken a toll on her health as well. While playing at the Cincinnati Open earlier this year, she suggested the tennis calendar is so busy that players eventually end up stressed out. “There are sports that are really tough because, physically, you might get beat up. But most sports have four months off, sometimes even six. Our schedule is crazy, and it’s getting more crazy every year, which is scary. You just have to train wisely,“ said Swiatek during a press conference.
With the addition of Wim Fisetter in her team, she will now be looking improve the psychological side of tennis so that she does not have to go through the same thing again. How excited are you about the new partnership? Do let us know in the comments below!
