Imagine being ranked beyond the top 200 and still posing a challenge against the world no. 2. The David is Sonay Kartal, while the Goliath is Coco Gauff. The 22-year-old from the United Kingdom navigated through a tough path full of challenges and has made it to the third round at Wimbledon. Her method of preserving memories is by getting a new ink every time. Will this achievement to stand against the US Open champion find a spot on her skin?
Sonay Kartal’s unique habit of getting tattoos to mark crucial moments was recently shared by her. In an interview with Eurosport, the WTA star was asked if she’d get a tattoo to celebrate her upcoming match against Coco Gauff.
She answered, “Despite the outcome, whatever it is, I think there could be another one. I think there will probably be a bet in place with my coach – he also has tattoos and is pretty covered. There’s always a joke in the Slams that we play if I reach certain rounds, there will be something,” pointing at a surprise that will be uncovered no matter if she wins or loses. Her mention of a shared love for tattoos with her coach, Ben Reeves, also shows a unique bond.

Kartal has come a long way in the ongoing tournament. She defeated Sorana Cirstea in the first round and Clara Burel in the second after coming through three qualifying matches. This marks her best performance in a Grand Slam so far. On being asked about what she thinks of her showdown against Coco Gauff, Kartal didn’t frown but expressed her excitement.
“These are the moments you dream of as a little kid,” she said, affirming that this position is nothing less than a dream for her. Submitting a wish to play on the prestigious center court, the 22-year-old added, “If it is Centre Court, I’ll be super excited and super proud to be on that court. It’s a really special thing.”
Philosophers say that once someone has nothing to lose, they become invincible. Making it clear that she’s set to follow a similar strategy, the WTA star added, “There’s a reason why she is No. 2 in the world, but at the end of the day, I’m going to put all of that aside. I have nothing to lose, and I’m just going to enjoy the moment and give it everything and see what I can do.”
