For former world’s number one tennis players, Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer, Wimbledon is nothing less than a pilgrimage. Not only did Federer win eight Wimbledon titles here but Sharapova’s journey to earning the major titles began from London’s grass court. Now years after their retirement, the duo showed off similar excitement revealing their adorable family plans while enjoying British Summer with some tennis fun.

In an interview with People Magazine, Sharapova spilled her plans for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. When asked whether she plans to attend the Grand Slam event, Sharapova expressed high possibilities with her response. “We spend more time in California since having our son, but also my fiancé’s British, so we spend summers in Europe,”- said the former world’s number 1 Russian WTA star.

The grass court of Wimbledon has been special for Sharapova. She won this title in 2004 when she was just 17. Not only did she defeat the legendary player Serena Williams, but her victory also marked the beginning of her journey to winning five Grand Slam titles. Now, four years after her retirement, Sharapova expressed her thrill about attending the tour as a spectator.

While the fraternity was already excited about the 37-year-old former tennis player’s presence at Wimbledon Centre Court, Sharapova kept up with her suspense about who she would be rooting for on the British grass court.

However, she expressed her happiness at Coco Gauff’s US Open win last year showing a possibility to support this talented American WTA star at Wimbledon.“I watched Coco win, which was spectacular. I saw her first game and then I went back home and then was like, ‘OK I’ve got to go to the Open because she’s now gone all the way to the final.’ I think it was a long time coming, so it felt like, yeah, I really wanted to witness that moment for her,” – said the former Russian WTA star.

Well, with Sharapova, another tennis legend might grace London’s Grand Slam tournament with his presence. He is none other than Roger Federer, who has won the majority (eight) of his Grand Slam titles here.

Earlier in June this year, Federer revealed his wish for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament. “Yeah, making plans. Kids are pushing me there as again. I’m happy at home, but the kids said ‘No, we want to come to Wimbledon this year. You were last year without us,”- he said.

Last year, Federer and his wife Mirka Federer attended a special felicitation ceremony at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Although the Swiss former tennis maestro was honored for his achievements on the grass surface, his kids couldn’t join him in London to witness the special moment. Because of this, Federer is probably planning to enjoy some matches at his “favorite tournament.”

“Wimbledon was always my favorite tournament, will always be my favorite tournament. My heroes walked the grounds here and walked the courts here. Because of them, I think I became a better player”- Federer further said. Well, Wimbledon is a tournament where Federer has defeated renowned players like Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and so on.

Federer became the only player to win five consecutive Wimbledon (2003 to 2007) after Björn Borg. Rafael Nadal defeated him in the 2008 Wimbledon final, but he bounced back to win the title in 2009 and 2012. Federer last won the Wimbledon championship in 2017, defeating Marin Cilic in the process and setting a record for the most Wimbledon titles in men’s singles.

Adding to that, due to Amazon Prime Video’s new sports documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days fans are experiencing quite an emotional journey these days, revisiting Federer’s final days in tennis. Naturally, witnessing Federer in his favorite venue once again right after the docuseries is going to be overwhelming for them. Now that the presence of these two legends is confirmed, they are curious to know which players Federer and Sharapova are rooting for.
