The 2024 Wimbledon Championships has become a star-studded affair even before its start. Earlier today, The Office lead actor, Steve Carell visited the lush green courts of Wimbledon along with his wife, Nancy. While the tournament will commence next week, the superstar will be seen in action in Despicable Me 4, which will be released early next month. During Carell’s visit to Wimbledon, he met some of the top players, including World Number 1, Iga Swiatek.

Despite Swiatek being a big fan of F.R.I.E.N.D.S., she kept her love for that show aside and had a warm exchange with Carell. Nonetheless, Swiatek was snubbed when Carell and his wife picked their favorite player. Instead of it being Swiatek, who has dominated women’s tennis in recent times, they picked Jelena Ostapenko over the Polish star.

Former tennis player, Laura Robson, was present with Carell and Nancy and they told about their favorite player to her, which Robson later shared on her Twitter handle. However, Ostapenko hasn’t had the best of seasons this year, winning just a solitary singles title at the Linz Open. On the other hand, Swiatek is fresh off the French Open victory earlier this month. The form kept aside, Ostapenko’s aggressive nature of play has left the superstar and his wife in awe.

Meanwhile, Carell and Swiatek had a warm meeting on the Centre Court at Wimbledon. While exchanging some pleasant greetings, the duo also posed in front of the camera for a picture together. Carell is also a big fan of tennis and he made sure to be on the sport’s biggest stages with some of the biggest stars. He became attached to tennis, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Steve Carell: Out of the pandemic grew a love for the racquet sport

As the Covid-19 pandemic gripped the world, an increasing number of people were taking to the tennis courts to play. Tennis became a popular activity, especially in the Southern part of California, with the climatic conditions being perfect throughout the year to play the racquet sport. In Carell’s locality, there was a tennis court and soon, a group of personnel from the entertainment industry formed, who regularly started playing the sport.

Carell’s wife, Nancy, also joined him and they were coached by Chris Crabb. Explaining how he learned from Chris and took tennis as a daily activity, Carell mentioned, “Chris takes tennis seriously, but he doesn’t take himself seriously. Every class, I learn something, and at the same time it’s the most fun part of my day. He is so kind and positive, and he’s created a great sense of community among all of us.”

Despite the unexpected setback of not going down in Carell’s favorite list, Swiatek will be aiming to win her maiden Wimbledon crown. Can the Polish star win back-to-back major titles after success at the French Open? Let us know your views in the comments below.
