Along with the management of Family Circle Tennis Center and Volvo Car Stadium, the 51-year-old WTA Tour event was purchased by the philanthropist and businessman Ben Navarro in September 2018. After Navarro bought all of Charleston Tennis LLC, the transaction was finalized. “Our goal is to continue to grow the tournament’s impact, promote junior tennis in Charleston, and make the sport more accessible for all,” he said after owning 100% of the tournament. He bought it along with Bob Moran, who runs the tournament.

Describing his mission behind purchasing the Charleston Open tournament, he continued by saying, “Personally, Charleston Tennis LLC’s mission of giving back and making a positive influence on our community align with my family’s values and beliefs.”

Two corporations, one of which was the proprietor of Family Circle magazine, had previously owned the event. But after 2018, the sole green clay event on the WTA tour came under his ownership. The WTA Tour tennis player Emma Navarro is the daughter of Ben Navarro. Following a promising junior career, she made her professional debut in 2019. In singles this year, she achieved a career-high ranking of No. 20 in the world, having played both doubles and singles.
