Anne Fray beating Coco Gauff in fame at 16—Is she the future of American tennis?

Is that Brock Purdy’s ‘secret twin’? Wait a minute, let me take a second look! Well, that’s Anna Frey, the 16-year-old tennis sensation from Utah. For those who are unaware, she’s already a superstar on social media. She has 2 million TikTok followers, perhaps Frey is also one of the most followed tennis players on the app. Coco Gauff has only 721.5k followers on her TikTok account.

With such a gigantic presence off the field, Frey has now also started to climb the stairs of the tennis world. She recently defeated the world number 108, Tamara Korpatsch (GER) in the qualifiers of the Tennis in The Land tournament in Cleveland.

Frey is currently ranked 1066 in the women’s singles ranking, and to beat someone who’s ranking just outside the Top is surely an enormous feat. What’s more interesting about this match is surely the scoreline. The way she dominated it in her 6-4, 6-4 triumph is more like a statement for her arrival on the biggest stages of the game. American tennis fans, keep an eye on this young lady!

Apart from this enormous victory, Frey’s best result in this season came in March at the ITF Canada 01A, where she reached the SF. The teenager has won $4,479 as prize money so far in her career and her best career ranking has been 1013. With this recent result, we can surely say this girl has enormous potential to become the next big thing in the American women’s tennis circuit.

 

Anna Frey first came to the spotlight when a video of her went viral. In that video, she was asked about her favorite animal, and in reply, she said, “Goat“. The American prodigy even hilariously made a sound of goat in that video and after seeing that circulate on social media several fans commented that she looks like San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Since then, everyone has become more curious to know about this youngster.

Later on, Frey was also spotted donning a Brock Purdy jersey for the playoffs. After seeing these pictures, Chubba Purdy (Brock Purdy’s brother) said, “Anna Frey is going to the Super Bowl“.

Seeing all the love and affection she got from social media, Frey explained, “It’s crazy. I’ve gotten recognized in public so much. It’s crazy, but it’s so fun, I love it.” However, her father, Tanner, couldn’t understand what the fuss was all about in the initial days. He said, “It’s been drinking out of a firehose.”

Coming back to Anna Frey’s on-court performances, she has won the Utah 6A state tennis championships as a freshman at Farmington. She is currently ranked number 3 in the USTA National Ranking and number 5 in the Class of 2026. Clinching the first WTA-level win is always exciting, but she doesn’t want to stay restricted. Frey has bigger goals in her tennis career.

Frey took up tennis at the age of seven and has been playing the sport with her older brother, Charles, ever since then. Her recent success is a contribution of many people like her family members and also her coach George Batrakov. Currently, she aims to play tennis at the collegiate level but she also has a dream of playing at the highest level.

Speaking about her tennis dreams, Frey revealed, “I want to be a pro. I want to be on tour, play in the U.S. Open, Australian Open, and all the grand slams. I watch it and I’m like, ‘Oh, I could do that!With big dreams in her eyes, can the teenager bring those to reality in the upcoming years? What do you think?
