Who Is Mirra Andreeva’s Legendary Coach? Everything to Know About Her Success With Garbiñe Muguruza and Wimbledon Glory

After a remarkable start to the Open De Rouen, Mirra Andreeva opened up about a new addition to her coaching partnership. The 16-year-old has recently parted ways with her former coach, Jean René Lisnard, and her place is taken by Conchita Martinez. After getting sights of the former Wimbledon champion Martinez’s cheers for Andreeva’s recent win, one would be curious to know all about this first Spaniard to win a women’s singles title at Wimbledon.

With a vast experience coaching elite players like Garbiñe Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova, Martínez is well known for her strategic skills. Now she will be utilizing her experience to train Mirra Andreeva for her current tournament. Whereas Andreeva has also voiced her optimism about the new coaching partnership after recently making a victorious return at the Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole. During a post-match interview, when asked, “Can you tell us about your collaboration with Conchita Martinez?”, she said, “Recently, we started working together. We both are seeing how it goes. But so far, I like it.” 

After connecting through Andreeva’s agency, the two had been working together for around two to three weeks now. They have been concentrating on improving Andreeva’s slice, a shot Martínez was well known for when she played. During the 18 years of her career, the former World No. 2 has achieved 33 single titles and 13 double titles. Not only that, her contributions to tennis got forever etched in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2020. After becoming the first Spanish woman to win the Wimbledon singles in 1994, she achieved her career high ranking of World No.2 in the following year.

The three-time Olympic medalist has previously worked as a part-time coach for Muguruza. Under Martinez, Muguruza won Wimbledon in 2017, reached the Australian Open final in 2020, and returned to the Top 3 in the WTA rankings after winning the season-ending championships in 2021. While she was working as a full-time coach with Pliskova, she earned the WTA Coach of the Year 2021 title. Whereas she was the full-time coach to Karolína Plíšková through 2018 and 2019.

During the very short tenure of Martinez’s collaboration with her, Andreeva went on to achieve her first victory at the Rouen Open against Nadia Podoroska. She expressed her joy at winning a match after two consecutive defeats in her previous matches.

Andreeva was participating in her first match since losing to Katie Volynets in Indian Wells in the opening round. She then pulled out of Miami because of a wrist problem. She did, however, display little signs of rust to defeat Podoroska, a past semifinalist at Roland Garros. Andreeva dominated the game and finished with a score of 6-1, 6-3 against Podoroska.

Winning her first match since the Australian Open, she said, “I cannot say I didn’t win a match for a long time, but I lost two matches in a row.” Further adding to it, she continued, “So this victory was important to me. I’m very happy with my level overall.”

In the second round, Andreeva will face either qualifier Fiona Ferro or Russian compatriot Elina Avanesyan. The tennis community will be eagerly observing to see if Andreeva’s game can reach new heights with Martínez as they test out their combination in competition. Andreeva’s natural talent, combined with Martínez’s track record of success, hints at the start of a dominant women’s tennis team.
