After winning her first WTA singles title, Marta Kostyuk has now reached the top 30 rankings on the women’s circuit. The Ukrainian tennis star has undoubtedly established herself in the top echelons of the racket game. However, the current number-27 player’s stellar success on tour isn’t the fruit of her labor alone.

Toiling behind Kostyuk during her on-court campaigns has been her coach, Sandra Zaniewska, who also played competitive tennis before putting down her racket in 2017. During her heydays, the former Polish tennis player amassed ten singles on the ITF Circuit. Not just in singles, but Zaniewska also marked seven triumphs in the doubles category and was the runner-up in the girls’ doubles of the 2009 Australian Open, where she teamed up with Aleksandra Krunić.

After her retirement, the WTA veteran joined the Champ’s Seed Foundation as a technical coordinator. For two years, Zaniewska was also a high-level director at the renowned French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy. Before taking up the coaching duties for Marta Kostyuk in the 2023 season, the Polish coach has also worked with other WTA players, Alizé Cornet and Petra Martić.

Now that she is under the tutelage of the Pole, Kostyuk previously opened up about how she is happy to have Zaniewska by her side during her journey on the tour.

“Wow, this is next-level coaching,” Marta Kostyuk previously hailed her coach, Sandra Zaniewska

In a previous interview with the WTA Insider, the Ukrainian tennis star spoke candidly about her professional relationship with her coach. Marta Kostyuk opened up about how Sandra was different from her other coaches, who never tried to have a real ‘conversation’ with her. She said, “Usually when I had this kind of behavior, all the other coaches, no one for one second would accept it or try to understand why I feel like this or try and have a conversation with me, or even just let me be.”

But now that she has teamed up with the Polish coach, Kostyuk added, “She did, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is next-level coaching. I’ve never seen this.'” As only a few WTA players have female coaches, the Ukrainian went on to say that she hopes that their coaching partnership will inspire other ‘girls to trust more women.’ She said,  “I hope that examples of mine and Sandra will bring more coaches on tour and the girls will trust more women.”
