Ukraine’s third most populated city and a major seaport and transport hub, Odesa has been in the center of all actions during the war. This city has been in constant target of shelling and air strikes by Russian forces. The 23-year-old Ukrainian tennis star, Dayana Yastremska has seen it all with her own eyes along with her family.
Odesa is her hometown, but unfortunately, she had to fly away to France for safety along with her younger sister Ivanna on 26 February 2022. Yastremska was forced to leave her parents in Odesa. But what prompted her to fly away from her homeland?

Two years ago Dayana Yastremska took to Instagram to share the terrifying experience of people residing in Odesa. At that time the war escalated at a rapid pace and her family had to focus on their children’s safety. Here’s what Yastremska said on Instagram while revealing the real reason for leaving Ukraine.

“After spending two nights in the underground parking, my parents made a decision at any cost to send me and my little sister out of Ukraine! Mom, Dad, we love you very much, take care of yourself!!! I love you my country! Ukrainians take care of your lives,” Yastremska said.
The Ukrainian star had also shared the terrifying experience of her sister Ivanka and their dog. They had to hide in the bathroom during incessant drone and missile attacks in Odessa. During an audio message posted by Yastremska, her sister sounded extremely frightened by the loud noises of the explosions. Those moments are still quite vivid in her memories. Yastremska is often seen remembering the heroes of her nation and sharing the stories of all the Ukrainians on the global stage.

Yastremska finds it tough to continue playing amid all these troubles
Recently, the Ukrainian tennis sensation penned a heartfelt message to all her countrypeople after securing a place in the semis of the AO. Dayana Yastremska said she’s proud of those Ukrainians who are giving their all to defend their motherland. Although she has now become the fourth qualifier in the Open Era to reach the SF of a major tournament, a part of her mind is always with Ukraine.
“The war, of course, it’s affected us, well, a lot. Because you cannot go home like you wanted, when you wanted, like it was before. You always read the news. You always see the videos. But just in general, it’s tough to play. But after two years you get to manage already how to deal with all the emotions and with everything that is going on inside,” Yastremska said in a recent press conference.
