The WTA Finals, formerly known as the WTA Tour Championships or the WTA Championships, is the WTA Tour’s season-ending event. It predates the WTA Tour by a year, as it began in 1972 as the season-ending tournament of the WTA Tour’s predecessor, the Virginia Slims Circuit.

The tournament has a unique format not seen in other WTA Tour tournaments since 2003: players are divided into two groups of four, each of which plays three round-robin matches. The top two in each group advance into the semifinal, who then battle to play in the finals.

However, the bid from the organizers in Cancun was chosen ahead of the other rivals such as Riyadh, Ostrava, Cluj Napoca, and Washington DC. Along with them, Jeddah was also rumored to be the host city for the Finals, but many players, including Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, spoke out against it. Cancun was then announced as the official destination for the 2023 WTA Finals on September 7 by the WTA.
