The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced Cancun, Mexico, as the chosen venue for the WTA Finals, ending the whirlwind of speculations which included possible host countries such as Saudi Arabia and the Czech Republic. The WTA Finals are set to showcase the top echelons of tennis talent, featuring the best eight singles players and the top eight doubles pairs. However, the event, eagerly anticipated by fans and players alike, seems to be overshadowed by concerns about the venue’s readiness.

With mere days to go before the prestigious tournament, concerns are mounting about the preparations. Belarusian tennis star, Aryna Sabalenka, upon arriving at the venue, took to Instagram to highlight the grim reality. Her clip showcases what seems to be a far-from-ready venue, particularly emphasizing the lack of adequate practice courts.

Adding to the chorus of concerns, The Tennis Letter tweeted about Sabalenka’s revealing video. To quote her clip, Sabalenka pointedly comments, “2 practice courts til Saturday. 1 stringer on site. Wow. 2 practice courts for the rest of the week for the elite women of our sport.” She emphasized the inadequate preparation for the elite women of the sport, finally asking, “What is this?”

The WTA plans to invest $14-15 million in a modular stadium near players’ hotels. But ground reality shows unpreparedness. Tennis journalist José Morgado highlighted concerns about the venue’s readiness for the WTA Finals in Cancun a few days ago.

Conveniently located near the players’ hotel. the architects designed the cutting-edge WTA Finals stadium to seat 4,000 spectators comfortably and included provisions for additional practice courts. On paper, the venue showcased the promise of an impeccable setup for the eagerly awaited WTA Finals. However, reality seems to tell a different story. Sabalenka’s clip highlights the venue’s lack of preparedness.

José Morgado, a respected tennis journalist, had echoed similar concerns two days ago. A video from writer Mateusz Wasiewski, which Morgado reposted on his platform, had previously brought attention to the questionable state of the WTA Finals venue just days before the event. Sabalenka’s video merely reinforces what was reported, making it clear that in the short span of time leading up to the tournament–now only three days away–not much progress has been made.
