Players like Billie Jean King,  Martina Navratilova, and Venus Williams have devoted their careers to bringing economic parity to tennis. Recently, Billie Jean King celebrated the 50th anniversary of the formation of WTA and equal pay at the US Open. Both happened in 1973, and after 50 years, the WTA players and the chief are happy to refute the arguments in practicality that deny them equal pay in every tournament.

The physical capability of male players is one thing that people justifying unequal pay have quoted. However, neither the players nor the chief of WTA is hesitant on taking up the challenge.

Martina Navratilova has come out strongly to prove that female players are not intimidated to play the best of five sets. She once even vouched to play five sets in the 80s but the organization disapproved. Moreover, she took on Novak Djokovic for propagating the idea that ATP players should be paid more.

Now, WTA Chief Steve Simon too has sided with her female players and is ready to take up the challenge. As reported by Inside Tennis, he stated, I’ve been consistent. If you want us to play best of five, we’ll play tomorrow.”

However, Simon does not believe that the best of five sets is good for any tennis player, be it male or female. He stated, “I don’t think that the best of five is in the best interest of male players either. The game has changed and all we are doing now is beating up our athletes and getting them hurt.”

If people are going to refute that, look at tennis legends like Rafael Nadal. He suffered multiple injuries last year.

Serena Williams once bashed Novak Djokovic for his orthodox mindset

The issue with this notion is that women players are always asked to prove that they are just as worthy as men. Billie Jean King had to do it by playing the “Battle of Sexes”. Obviously, the results were embarrassing for the ones who doubted her capabilities.

Following on the same lines, Serena Williams once bashed Djokovic for having a discriminatory mindset. She stated that if he had a daughter, he could try telling her that his son deserved more than her.
