However, the weather wasn’t on tennis’ side as hurricane Ida came to ruin the party. Delaying a few plays and locking fans indoors, it brought the state a standstill. German International Angelique Kerber was one of those who fell victim to the weather conditions, as New York battled strong winds and flash flooding.

World No. 17, Angelique Kerber faced the consequences of Hurricane Ida. With torrential rains gushing against the roof of the Arthur Ashe stadium, it locked both fans and players indoors. Hence, the German star took to her Instagram as she detailed how the horrifying weather affected her stay.

Makeshift home

Prepping for her round 2 clash against Anhelina Kalinina, the 33-year-old was locked indoors because of Hurricane Ida. With floods taking over the city roads, it forced her to spend the night in the gym. Taking to her Instagram, the former World No.1 revealed her staycation at the fitness center.

However, not just players but fans too faced the wrath of Ida. Battling past the weather, they made it to the stadiums to witness their stars live in action. However, as the weather took a turn for the worse, returning home seemed impossible. In newly emerged footage, fans are seen stranded in the parking lot with their cars submerged underwater.

With no assistance from authorities, they fell victim to the devastation of Hurricane Ida. As games continued elsewhere, a few roofs couldn’t stand the strong rains, causing matches to be delayed and rescheduled.

Angelique Kerber for the win

On the business end of things, Although Angelique might not have slept in ideal conditions, but she definitely woke up on the right side of the bed. Putting on a show in her round 2 clash, she outclassed her Ukrainian opponent, beating Anhelina in straight sets. Courtesy of her dominant display, the crowd backed the experience for a stellar performance. Delivering the expected, she eased past her opponent, advancing with the scoreline 6-3, 6-2.

However, with that emphatic win, she sets up for a fierce battle in round 3 of the tournament. In a battle of the best, she faces former US Open champion, Sloane Stephens for a spot in the next round. Fans wait in anticipation to see the two giants go head to head. As they lock horns, they promise an enticing outing. Which one of the two former champions will emerge victorious?
