As a player, getting proper rest after every match is mandatory. It helps them wake up fresh and prepare themselves for their upcoming encounter. Improper sleep cycles and rest could impact a player’s mindset and disturb their natural game. Recently, the WTA is under a lot of scrutiny, after many players complained about the improper scheduling of their matches. Carrying the debate forward was none other than America’s favorite Coco Gauff.
The 19-year-old recently spoke about the bad scheduling and how it impacts the player’s mindset. Emerging as a vocal advocate for change within the tennis community, Coco Gauff has firmly addressed the prevalent issue of late match scheduling in recent tournaments. In a candid interview, Gauff looked into the challenges players encounter when matches stretch well past midnight, shedding light on the physical and mental toll such scheduling takes.
Gauff shared her own experiences, recounting instances when late-night matches were followed by early morning starts, leaving players with inadequate rest and preparation time. She mentioned a recent incident in Montreal where she finished a match late and was scheduled for an early match the next day, causing sleep deprivation and fatigue. Gauff emphasized the detrimental effect of such scheduling on players’ physical and mental states.
“The situation last week in Montreal, even, like, when I played and I finished against Marketa at, like, 10:30, they were trying to put me at 1:00 the next day, which meant warming up at 11:15, which means waking up, leaving the hotel at 9:00 and waking up at 8:00. Finishing at 10:30, by the time you get to the hotel, that hotel was, like, a 40-minute drive away,” said Gauff.
