Serena Williams is arguably the greatest of all time in women’s tennis. The American legend claimed 23 Grand Slams over a professional career spanning almost 3 decades. However, she chose to retire from tennis in 2022 to focus on her family. Williams proudly declared that she was evolving away from tennis. Rightly so, as she is not just an entrepreneur, but also a businesswoman, and a mom. While many fans may argue about her GOAT status in tennis, there is something that Williams wants to be an indisputable GOAT at.
In an interview with the People, on November 21, Serena opened up about goals, diet, and partnerships along with missing tennis. As Williams transitioned away from tennis almost two years ago, it has been a crazy ride. The American legend not only missed tennis but also had to find new ways to burn energy. And from this comes her new goal: to run a half marathon.
She said, “I’m trying to compete — not compete, rephrase — trying to do a half-marathon. That’s my new goal. So it’s just like I have to do something competitive. I miss tennis like crazy.” It’s not easy to give way to the competitive spirit after nurturing it for the whole of her life. However, the mother of two has found a way to balance everything. Other than marathons, Williams has also discovered something else to excel at.

Since retirement from tennis, Williams has found another thing to be GOAT at. Talking about her family, the mother of two further said, “I want to be around them every single day of my life. And I try to do that, and I just figure I want to be the GOAT at something else. And for me, that’s being a mom right now.”
But the question arises: would she have made different choices if she were a man? Maybe so. Serena Williams further pointed out that the few choices she made in life were inherent to being a woman.
She said, “But as a woman, I had to make different choices that I probably wouldn’t have had to make if I were a guy, but that’s okay. I love that.” Though the star didn’t elaborate explicitly on the choices she made as a woman, she might be talking about her retirement decision. As she did say, “I love that I chose my family.”

“Mom” Serena Williams opens up about her parenting habits
Being a mom was the major inspiration behind Serena’s retirement from tennis. The 23-time grand slam champion welcomed her second daughter, Adira Ohanian, in August 2023. And now, the two sisters are the center of gravity for the tennis legend. Serena Williams is a business yet hands-on mom. From teaching her to hold her racquet, dressing up for fun November costume day, and inventing new games to enjoy their time together, she does it all. Moreover, when she is away for work, the legend writes letters to her elder daughter to remind her that she loves her.

However, while trying to be a fun parent for her daughter, Williams and her husband are strict too, when they need to be. Despite ample resources at their disposal, there are a few rules that Williams has for her daughters when it comes to social media. She said, “It’s a scary world. It’s a digital world for kids right now. I’m always on with my daughter, but we don’t allow her on certain platforms.”
Certainly, people can argue about her GOAT status in tennis, with Margaret Court or Martina Navratilova as her challengers. But Serena Willams is doing the parenting right, that’s for sure.
