Emma Vigeland, a well-known American journalist, shared her thoughts on TERFism in a tweet that provoked a reaction from Martina Navratilova. Vigeland’s tweet claimed that TERFism reinforces traditional gender roles and restricts women by defining womanhood based on their sexual or reproductive organs.

Vigeland’s tweet read, “TERFism actually upholds patriarchy by gatekeeping femininity, insisting that the boundaries of womanhood are drawn by sexual and/or reproductive organs. By reinforcing existing gender binaries, TERFs lock women into the male gaze: whether for baby-making or mere sexualization.”

Navratilova promptly countered Vigeland’s statement, calling it “utter drivel” and challenging the notion that being a woman is solely tied to femininity. She retorted, “Being a woman doesn’t mean being feminine… it can be that but absolutely doesn’t mean it needs to be that. Male gaze… I mean whaaaat?!?”

Emma Vigeland replied to Navratilova’s comment with the following statement, “Serena Williams is the greatest of all time”

This isn’t the first time Navratilova has been actively involved in a Twitter discussion. As the Twitter clash intensified, Navratilova further responded to other participants on the same thread, calling them out.

As the debate continued, a participant in the Twitter thread tried to explain Vigeland’s viewpoint, suggesting that she was discussing how femininity is perceived by men, rather than being an inherent quality of women. The person stated, “Martina, Emma was talking about femininity not as a concept coming from women but as the idea men have about women. TERFs are trying to restrict what women can or can’t do. My father was one of those. I think you misunderstood Emma’s post.”
