Jessica Pegula's emotional win over Shelby Rogers—does friendship make competition tougher or more meaningful?

It’s time for goodbyes! Rogers announced last week on social media that she will retire following the 2024 US Open. Now, with her 4-6, 3-6 defeat to her compatriot Jessica Pegula in R1 on Wednesday, her farewell got confirmed. On the other hand, Pegula was in tears to force an ugly end to her best friend’s illustrious career.

The 31-year-old tennis star reached the QFs of the 2016 French Open and 2020 US Open. Those two were the most notable results from her incredible 14-year-long career. She has struggled a lot with injuries in recent years, but she was truly a bliss to watch when she was in form. Just like Pegula, everyone is now sad to see the end of her tennis journey.

Both Pegula and Rogers first played together in 2011 at an ITF event in North Carolina. After that, they played quite a few doubles matches together, making some deep runs. This is how their friendship started on the courts. And then off the court. Last year Pegula was spotted congratulating Rogers on her wedding to John Slavik.

Jessica Pegula never wanted to face her friend so early at the US Open. She said,It sucks having to play her.” Pegula was surprised to hear Shelby Rogers’ official announcement to retire after the 2024 US Open, even though Rogers had previously hinted at the possibility. “It’s crazy to me that, like, obviously I know she had a lot of injuries, but to see people, like, my age retiring, her, Danielle, it’s sad.

Following her defeat by Pegula, the 31-year-old American seized the microphone and, mustering her strength, delivered a poignant farewell speech to the sport she loved. “Right now, I feel many emotions, I would have liked to prepare better. It is very special to share this with you all. The truth is I don’t want to leave it, but my body says it’s time. I hope not to become a stranger and see you all very soon,” stated the woman who rose to No. 30 in the world and who will now take a different path in search of happiness.

Rogers, despite her singles retirement announcement, is still competing in the doubles (with Petra Martic) and mixed doubles (with Robert Galloway) events at the U.S. Open. But what were the main reasons for this bold call and how did the tennis world react to her retirement?
