Florida’s Alycia Parks is all set to take on Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz in the qualifiers of the 2024 US Open. Parks is a big fan of six-time US Open champion, Serena Williams. Along with several other American tennis stars like the defending champ, Coco Gauff, many of the fans have high hopes for Parks. She has already made a decent run in the first major tournament this season. It’ll be interesting to see how far she goes in the last Grand Slam tournament of this season. Before she marks a deep run into the tournament, she has Romero Gormaz standing in her way.

Alycia Parks vs Leyre Romero Gormaz: Preview

Parks started her season with a bang, reaching the third round of the Australian Open but after that, it has been a pretty ordinary season for the 23-year-old. However, in June she finally managed to pull things back on track with a title triumph at the WTA 125K Gaiba, IT, and then again almost one month later she won the title at the WTA 125K Warsaw, PL. Parks is entering this match after her two-set defeat to Australia’s Destanee Aiava in the qualifiers for the Canadian Open.

Gormaz, on the other hand, had most of her success on the ITF tour. So far, she has won 7 ITF titles in her career, and even this season she has also made quite a few deep runs in those tournaments. However, she could only clinch a title at the ITF Italy 11A. She is entering this match after her R16 loss to Eva Vedder by 2-6,3-6 at the ITF Italy 12A. Can she come up with a better performance against Parks?

Prediction: Parks to win in straight sets

Parks is currently ranked 116 in the world, while Gormaz is ranked 176th in the women’s singles ranking. Is it the only thing that is keeping Alycia Parks ahead of Gormaz in this match? Although Parks is just one year older than the Spaniard, she has a greater experience of playing at the bigger stages of the game. This is her home tournament, so we can expect some crowd support for the Floridan. Now, it will all depend on how Gormaz manages this pressure. It will be important for her to play her own game and try to silence the crowd right from the word go in this epic contest.

Currently, Parks has a win-loss record of 2-5 while Gormaz hasn’t played much on the main tour, so her win-loss record is just 0-1. However, if we consider the number from the ITF circuit, then the Spaniard has quite a decent win-loss record (33-17).

Parks’ aggressive style of play may put Gormaz into some trouble in this match. She needs to watch out for Parks’ fiery serves. The American has a unique ability to generate enormous power behind her serves and groundstrokes. Alycia Parks also has good court coverage ability. However, she needs to keep an eye on her double fault counts. So far, she has hit 34 aces this season but has committed 47 double faults. Even in the last match, we saw her hitting 8 aces but committing 11 double faults.

Gormaz, on the other hand, has struggled a bit against players with an aggressive style of play. So, looking at all these factors, we feel, if Parks doesn’t gift this match to the Spaniard, then it’ll be a bit tough for Gormaz to win this contest.
