Coco Gauff vs. Aryna Sabalenka: US Open Championship Match Preview

The current world No. 4 didn’t have the brightest start to this campaign, having faced a number of initial round defeats. Coco Gauff, however, regained her form during the North American hardcourt swing as she emerged victorious at both the Cincinnati and Citi Open. Continuing the strong momentum, the current world No. 4 has now reached the US Open final after her straight sets victory against the 10th seed Czech, Karolína Muchová (6-4, 7-5).

Aryna Sabalenka, on the other hand, also had a great hard-court season, having reached the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters. And now in the US Open, the Belarusian tennis star is one match victory away from her second Grand Slam triumph. After attaining the new world No. 1 status, Sabalenka made a stellar comeback against Madison Keys to clinch a semifinal victory, 0-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Gauff vs. Sabalenka: Head-to-Head

Sabalenka and Gauff have locked horns with each other five times on the tour, with the latter enjoying a 3-2 overall head-to-head record. However, in their most recent meeting at the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells, it was the Belarusian who prevailed in straight sets of 6-4 6-0. Prior to this, the WTA stars faced each other in the round of 16 of the previous season’s Canadian Open, where the American came out on the top in the three-set thriller, 7-5, 4-6,  7-6.

Prediction: Gauff in three sets

Although Sabalenka has now attained the new world No. 1 status, this is the summer of the American tennis prodigy. Gauff has raised her levels during the hard court season and is further on an 11-match win streak. With more hard-court wins than any other WTA player this season, the 19-year-old will likely come out on top in this US Open title match.
